In one of the evening’s most hotly contested races, Norbert Leo Butz took home the Best Actor in a Musical Tony Award for Catch Me If You Can. Calling his character, FBI Agent Carl Hanratty, “the greatest role I’ve ever been offered in my life,” Butz’s acceptance speech emphasized his thankfulness.
“This award doesn’t mean that I’m the best of anything, but it might mean that I’m the most grateful man in this room tonight," he said. "I’m so honored to represent Catch Me If You Can, a great American musical.”
Alluding to the violent death of his sister during the show’s 2009 out-of-town tryout, Butz said, “I have to be honest with you: This one was not easy for me." Thanking the company for their constant support, he concluded, "This is for my father, who I based this character on, and for my sister. I love you, Teresa, we remember you every night.”
